Passions & Obsessions - Electric Guitar (work in progress)
I’ve long held the ambition to want to be a Graphic Designer, and my A-level combination of DT & Art (alongside Geography) have highlighted to me the attributes I enjoy across both domains. I enjoy the design process, typography and developing 3D concepts, all this combined has reaffirmed my ambition to want to pursue a career in Graphic Design.
Final Outcome
For my A-level Art I chose to work on a topic theme of 'Passions & Obsessions' centred around my hobbies, favourite pass times and things I am passionate about. One of these is photography.
I had to disassemble the camera and photograph each individual piece which was a very time consuming but rewarding experience. I had to plan out the exact placing for each piece of the exploding camera and stacked furniture to reach a point on the green screen where I could take photos in the same lighting level as the subject (me) in the picture.
Development Work
Here are some sketches of the initial ideas for an exploding camera. I wanted to have the camera being held in front of a person's face and the concept of the many infinitesimal moving parts inspired me as I had been on a personal journey designing, drawing and dropping objects from differing heights to create effects.
Final Outcome
This outcome was achieved by hanging skateboard parts in front of a green screen and capturing them from different angles. This was achieved in my bedroom at home where the key was getting suitable lighting. I am proud of this piece; it was almost an accident, as all initial attempts at dropping objects were too unfocused, leading me to trial a different technique. This outcome received positive feedback and was selected as a showcase on the Skinners’ Sixth Form Instagram page.
Development Work
I was inspired by the work of Todd McLellan and Jim Golden. I tried (and failed) and reworked multiple ways to respond to McLellan's work by dropping objects from different heights and capturing them in mid-air. The piece (bottom right) was originally intended as the final outcome of this project: me falling through space surrounded by objects related to my passions and obsessions. However, I much preferred the impact of the Skateboard piece.
Final Outcome
My school has an annual Winter Ball and this year they ran a competition for the branding and poster which would be used to promote the event. The competition was judged by the prefects and events committee and my work was selected. The original brief was simple, although as you will see things evolved and the 'clients' involved had a specific vision in mind. "Create a winter themed poster that provides information on the event and offers an QR Code to the ticket website". I received some feedback (that it was too informal for a black-tie occasion) so adapted it.
Development Work
Here are some sketches and typography options that inspired me and an original version that I developed entirely by hand. I adapted the final version to meet the brief making it more formal, yet keeping the original colour palatte and the glitter ball.
Final Outcome
This is an image of a large acrylic painting 33’ by 13’ on canvas which was completed in 2-3 days. To date painting is not one of my core strengths, (although I enjoy it) so I found this to be a challenge. That said, I really like how it turned out and it is one of my proudest achievements.
Development Work
Here are some of the other sketches I did that built up and inspired the final 'Skulls' outcome.
Development Work (prior to selecting 'Skulls' as primary theme)
Before selecting the theme of skulls I sketched some alternative drawings also along the theme of Fantasy Art. This project was an opportunity to work in lots of different mediums such as pencil, fine liner, acrylic paint and pewter and develop my skills. The largest of the three pieces is created entirely in fine liner, something I enjoy and I like the atmosphere it created.
Final Design, build in progress
The brief for this DT project was: "design and manufacture a vinyl record storage” for my client George Groves. George (a friend of mine) is like me, an avid collector of vinyl, and he wanted somewhere to showcase a selection of current favourites and avoid damage being caused. This is my favourite design, inspired by the Tyne Bridge Newcastle. In the workshop I experimented with laminating wood, a skill I was not familiar with previously and it will be useful when making the final product, which I have now started.
Development Work
I made a series of designs prior to selection, each one featuring an isometric drawing done in Adobe Illustrator and a CAD model, made in Sketchup. Included here are some initial concept sketches and typography experimentation.
Final Outcome
Last year I volunteered to take part in NCS (National Citizen Service) for a week which involved the creation of a new brand to raise money for mental health awareness. We came up with the idea of calling our group “Never Mind”, a play on words representing the irony that so often there is a stigma in talking about mental health and yet it is so intrinsically important.
Development Work + photos of the project in action
This sketch shows the design our group used, these had to be done with a tight turnaround time as we only had a week to conduct the whole project, that said our team really liked the visual, colour palate and acronym used. Not the most sophisticated piece but it was impactful and served it's purpose.
Final Outcome
This is some work performed in my own time (no brief) just taking some inspiration and designing my own logo and fashion outfits. Next, I plan to develop the signage for a ‘pop up’ store leveraging the same logo.
Inspiration Board (not my work)
This collection shows what inspired the fashion logo; inspiration from various upcoming graphic designers.
To conclude where I started I wanted to include a piece I am currently working on. It's another work inspired by Todd McLellan for my Art A-level, using the same techniques as the 'Exploding Camera' but this time using an old electric guitar I acquired on eBay. I wasn't satisfied with this as the final iteration, so I am in the process of re-working it so that the exploding pieces are more integral.
This is the current iteration which I am still finalising...
